So today, as I browse thru Huffington Post I realize, hey it’s Women’s Equality Day! Shoot, I must have missed that section of greeting cards when I purchased my Happy Grandparents Appreciation Day card (yes, I actually bought one). I realized, okay what do I do that would spread women’s equality? How do I help in this movement? Perhaps, my movement has yet to come. Then I think about different activties I’ve been involved in.
Yes, I joined a sorority in college, one of the largest in the country. Some may snarl their lip at the thought of a sorority but when it comes down to brasstacts, I’m who I am today in part because of this organization. These women who pledged before, with and after me, the seven great Founders that created it and the women of all the chapters that share a link wtih mine (Eta Nu what what!). Through the hardships I personally faced in being in the organization paired with the lessons I learned and joey I also experienced. I personally choose this sorority mainly because of its philanthropy. What screams girl power more than raising awareness and education about breast cancer? Thru partnerships with the NFL and Susan G. Komen, supporting a cause that plagues so many women (and yes, men also) is a cause that is very close to my heart.
However, when I really think about strong women, I think about my mother. My mother was one of the first 100 women to fly a helicopter in the United States Army. She was the only woman in her flight program and out ranked my father when they married (albeit, she is 5 years his senior). She stayed in the Army for ten years, until she had my older sister and was basically told to drop her off at day care and get back in the air. I’m so happy to see the strides the military has made in family support and readiness since then. And I’m also pleased to know that my mother was part of something that paved the way for military women now, not only in flight but in military combat.
So no, I haven’t paved the way for anyone, yet. But I do my part, I vote, I educate myself and try to stay invovled in my community. I work for a University that was once not open to females and I hope to enroll there soon. The best thing women can do is continue to support one another. Let’s hope for more female CEOs, more female politicans (hopefully more that I agree with) and more than anything-I hope we can instill a sense of self worth and love in each other…”was love, the greatest of all things.”
